Last meeting's minutes

January 23, 2010

Our first 2010 meeting was very fruitful.

We had a memorial service for Bishop Job of Chicago, OCA, who recently passed away. May his memory be eternal!

Fr Elijah shared some interesting reflection about the translation of Ps 118/119: “God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us”, and why it is more accurate to translate it as “The Lord is got”, why it matters for Orthodox Christology.

We voted unanimously (7 YES) to have our by-laws suspended for 2 years.

Consequently, people with academic background and interested in our discussions may freely participate in our meetings. No membership dues are required.

From now on, our meetings will be exclusively

dedicated to the presentation of a paper / article / reflection,

followed by a discussion.

At our next meeting on February 20, 2010, Perry Hamalis, will present his article on Ethics from an Orthodox perspective.

We established a list of possible future topics:

  • Mariology, by Helen

  • Creation, by Gayle: presented at our May 8th, 2010 meeting

  • Human cognition, by Deacon Lawrence

  • The theme of place in John of Damascus, or Joshua's typology, by Fr Elijah

  • Images of ordination in the Old Testament, by Rebecca

  • The theme of light in Western and Eastern spirituality, by Emma

Another possibility would be to invite Helen’s daughter, an anthropologist, to share with us about a group of Brazilian Roman Catholics who recently converted to the Orthodox faith.

Emma’s husband, John Michet, could also share his reflection about exorcism.
